Addressing Common Braces Concerns: Tightening, Wire Pokes, and Ulcers
Posted by Dudley Smiles on October 16, 2024
Braces are always a unique experience for every patient since many factors impact individual treatment. However, there are also a number of scenarios the majority of people will experience at some point. Today, the Dudley Smiles team will address common braces concerns, like tightening, wire pokes, ulcers, and more.
Ulcers, Tightening & Wire Pokes
Let’s take a closer look at three of the most common issues that Dr. Dudley discusses with his patients, along with tips on how to manage them:
1. Mouth Ulcers
What It Is: Friction from traditional braces can sometimes result in conditions like canker sores or mouth ulcers. How to Manage: Over-the-counter treatments or a saltwater rinse can effectively relieve irritation. Maintain good oral hygiene and avoid spicy or acidic foods to prevent further discomfort. If ulcers continue or worsen, schedule an appointment for further evaluation.
2. Tightening Discomfort
What It Is: After your braces are adjusted, you might feel some pressure or discomfort as the added force works to move your teeth.
How to Manage: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help. Stick to soft foods during this time to ease any discomfort. Also, cold foods, such as ice cream can be soothing.
3. Wire Pokes
What It Is: Sometimes, the ends of the wires on your braces may poke or irritate the inside of your mouth, causing discomfort. How to Manage: Applying orthodontic wax to the wire ends can minimize irritation. You can also gently reposition the wire with a cotton swab. If the issue persists, contact our office for help.
Braces & Common Issues
When first starting orthodontic treatment, we anticipate our patients to have lots of questions and concerns. All of these are completely valid, and Dr. Dudley is dedicated to ensuring that your voice is heard during your treatment. We’ve compiled a great overview of tips and tricks to keep handy along the way:
Understanding Braces Components: It’s natural to be curious about how the different parts of your braces work together. Our team will walk you through each component so that you feel confident and informed throughout your treatment.
Maintaining Oral Hygiene: Keeping your braces clean is essential for effective treatment. We’ll provide detailed instructions on brushing and flossing techniques to ensure excellent oral health. If you have questions about your routine, feel free to ask!
Dietary Adjustments: Hard, sticky, or sugary foods can interfere with your braces and slow progress. A braces-friendly diet is crucial, especially for younger patients, to protect your braces and keep treatment on track. For kids with braces, parents should closely monitor what they’re snacking on to avoid any damage from occurring.
Gum Sensitivity or Swelling: The pressure of your braces may cause some gum sensitivity or swelling. Rinsing with saltwater and practicing good oral hygiene can help.
Handling Emergencies: If you experience a broken bracket or poking wire, we’re here to help. We’ll guide you on how to handle orthodontic emergencies and when to contact our office for assistance.
Persistent Bad Breath: Food particles can get stuck in your braces, leading to bad breath. Regular brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash, as well as routine dental cleanings, will help maintain fresh breath.
Impact on Speech: Braces might cause temporary changes in speech, such as a slight lisp. This usually improves over time, and practicing speaking out loud can help you adjust more quickly.
Changes in Bite: As your teeth shift, you are likely to notice changes in your bite, even if correcting it isn’t a huge part of your treatment. Let us know if you experience discomfort so we can adjust as needed.
Tracking Progress: Regular check-ups are key to monitoring your treatment’s progress. We’ll update you during appointments and make necessary adjustments to ensure everything stays on track. It’s really important to attend these appointments, regardless of what route we take for your orthodontic treatment.
Social Confidence: Braces can sometimes impact your confidence, especially in social settings. Remember that braces are temporary, and the outcome will be worth it. One great strategy is to connect with family and friends who either currently have braces or have had braces before. They’ll be able to relate closely to what you’re going through and offer additional support.
